WHY DO YOU WANNA WORK WITH CHILDREN AND SUSTAINABILITY Walking With Nikola Milotova
Another PodCast from Radio Luftballett – interviewing one of this autumns students at Sustainable Development by Involvement.
To a man who knows nothing, Mountains are Mountains, Waters are Waters, and Trees are Trees. But when he has studied and knows a little, Mountains are no longer Mountains, Waters are no longer Waters, and Trees are no longer Trees. But when he has thoroughly understood, Mountains are again Mountains, Waters are again Waters, and Trees are Trees.
Some of the students in Sustainable Development by Involvement, and one of the Teachers, are involved in a podcast at Radio Luftballett. Please enjoy!
Marianne, Anne, Kari, Yuko, Tone, Yvonne, Andrea and met at Bjørnefjorden in Os, to talk about research and education for sustainability. When working together it is important to meet each other! And we have spent an entire day talking, laughing and inventing!
We discussed applications for funding, our goals for doing our research, what terms we want to use in our work and what this means at kindergarten level. One important topic was the term eco-citizen and the competences needed in sustainability, such as problem solving, creativity, action, critical thinking, believing in the future and a sustainable life and being and becoming agents of change.
Ida introduced us to innovation in education in a fantastic presentation:
We later used our newly acquired knowledge to talk about what this can be in kindergarten, when including education for sustainability.
A sunny day in Bergen in November 2017, Marianne and Andrea brought their class of international students from “Sustainable Development by Involvement” (3 year students), and hiked up to the Food Forest at Ulriken. Here we attended a guided tour by the talented ecologist Benedicte Brun.
We were also joined by the artist Margrethe Kolstad Brekke, who makes podcasts about sustainability and sustainable development.
This day we focues on resources, and Benedicte gave us a guided tour focusing on the Food Forest as a resource, with weight on cycles in nature (such as phosphorus, kcrbon and other nutrients).
Then we made vegetable soup and apple pie. Students and teachers were very happy with the day!

We are a research group from Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. We have an interdiciplinary approach to research about education for sustainability!
